We are left with the feeling that with the addition of more substance to the film, this may have actually worked. It is a depressing film buoyed up by the inner resilience Watts and Dillon instill in their characters. Watts and Dillon offer memorable performances, even given the weak and clichéd script Collyer has written. The manner in which the couple works things out provides the rest of the story. They attempt to live with Melissa's alcoholic mother (Tess Harper) who runs a foster home in her tiny house, but the stress overcomes both Melissa and Richie, and the added stalking from Melissa's previous boyfriend Justin (Norman Reedus) provides further stress. In the joy of the discovery Richie asks Melissa to marry him, but Melissa loses her job and they are evicted from the motel, they face difficult choices about life and their relationship. They’re barely scraping by on her cashier job at the dingy 24-hour gas and convenience shop, Sunlight Jr. Instructions: Takes only one bulb per light. Melissa (Naomi Watts) works the day shift at a convenience store called Sunlight Jr., managed by a repulsive toad named Edwin (Antoni Corone) and assisted at shift change by the funky Vivian (Adrienne Lovette). is a love story at odds with the times and with the conditions that surround the characters. Set in a rather smarmy location in Florida, Sunlight Jr. Hard-working convenience store clerk Melissa and her boyfriend Richie are trapped in a generational cycle of poverty. And can we show some awards attention towards Naomi Watts please.This is Laurie Collyer's second outing as a writer and director (her debut was the excellent 'Sherrybaby' with Maggie Gyllenhaal) and it is sad to see that the film, despite some very impressive acting from a small cast, simply doesn't get off the ground. is a small little film that may not be a exceedingly pleasant viewing experience, though it might very well be a necessary one. In spite of the flawed character that he is, surprisingly Richie is also likeable. Norman Reedus gets one scene to do justice to his talent but otherwise he is mostly non-existent in the film. ![]() His love for Melissa is unquestionable, but the same can’t be said about his desire to sustain or the will to attain stagnancy. Matt Dillon is great too, in the role of paraplegic who believes more in saying than actually doing. Till now,we already know that Naomi Watts is the go to girl for directors when it comes to playing broken down women,but this character which she plays is more defined by her strength than by her grief. Her Melissa is a portrait of a woman brimming with absolute courage even in the midst of chaotic present and dark future. Its highly appreciative of Watts to choose to do such a film even at her career’s peak, and not only do it, but also do it with selfless conviction. Which brings me to the performances, especially of Watts, who shines through out the film. Though one can certainly appreciate and take strength from the courage which Melissa displays despite being surrounded by bleak future and utter hopelessness. Even if it means giving audiences no ray of hope to which they can look up to. never shies away from the grimness surrounding Melissa (Naomi Watts) and Richie’s (Matt Dillon) life. It’s really sad state of affairs when the most powerful and rich nation in the world can’t devise a healthcare policy which is within the reach of poor. ![]() ![]() This couldn’t have been more apparent in the film, when one of the hospital scenes opens with the shot of American flag. At the same time, film hides no bars in clearly being critical of the state of US governance especially in the area of healthcare. does manage to achieve what it set out to – to enlighten us with the plight of marginalized, and how most of us take the comfort of life for granted. Though to its credit the film does manage to affect and move you, which was the sole purpose of the film to start with. It’s grim and dark, most of times sad with little, tiny chunks of humor sent in. surely belongs to the latter category and it is made clear right from the outset that the film won’t cater to pleasure seeking audiences. Most of them are made for entertainment and only some for enlightenment. Purpose of cinema is difficult to define. ![]()
